Advance Tertiary College (ATC) is proud to celebrate the latest cohort of the ATC Legal Aid Clinic (LAC). A total of 42 students from the batch of 2026 received their certificates of completion in June, marking the end of their period of training and service with the clinic. The certificates recognise the successful completion of the ATC Legal Aid Programme for the 2025/2026 session.

From the Classroom to Real Clients

The journey began with a dedicated training session, where the selected students familiarised themselves with what legal aid is all about and why it matters in Malaysia’s justice system. With that foundation in place, the students then spent time with our partners at the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (KL), assisting the clients who came to the centre for help.

For many of the students, this was their first opportunity to apply what they had learned in lectures to real people facing real problems. Working under supervision, they saw how matters are taken in, how information is gathered, and how advice is shaped around each client’s circumstances. Questions that once lived in textbooks suddenly had names, faces and consequences attached to them.

Learning Beyond the Classroom

The experience has been an incredibly educational one. It exposed our students to the realities of life and the daily struggles that many members of the public face, lessons that are difficult to teach in a lecture hall.

Time spent at a legal aid centre also builds habits that serve young lawyers for the rest of their careers: listening patiently, explaining the law in plain language, and treating every client with dignity regardless of their circumstances.

About the ATC Legal Aid Clinic

The ATC Legal Aid Clinic operates under the leadership of Mr. Vishal, who guides selected students through their training and their service placement. The clinic gives students the chance to gain real-life experience before they graduate, and it reflects one of our core goals as a law school: to produce graduates with as much real-world exposure as possible, built on a strong academic foundation. The certificates presented at the ceremony recognise both the commitment and the service each student has given.

Why Legal Aid Matters for Law Students

Clinical legal education is widely regarded as one of the most effective ways to prepare students for practice. Through legal aid work, students develop client-interviewing skills, sharpen their legal research, and build the empathy and professional judgement that classrooms alone cannot provide.

Just as importantly, the work contributes to access to justice for Malaysians who might otherwise be unable to afford legal assistance. The Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (KL) has long played a central role in that effort, and ATC is honoured that our students can support its work. We thank the centre for welcoming our students and for the guidance extended to them throughout the programme.

Practical Experience at Every Stage

Opportunities like the ATC Legal Aid Clinic sit alongside mooting, mock trials and case-based learning in the practical training that defines an ATC legal education. Our recent success at the 21st LAWASIA International Moot Competition is another example of students testing their skills beyond the classroom.

Whether you are starting out with the Foundation in Law, working towards the University of London LLB, transferring through the UK Degree Transfer Programme (Law), or preparing for the profession with the Certificate in Legal Practice (CLP), practical experience is built into the journey at ATC.

Congratulations once again to all 42 students of the ATC Legal Aid Clinic batch of 2026, and thank you to Mr. Vishal and our partners at the Bar Council Legal Aid Centre (KL) for making the programme a success.
